Never Be Free

Hello friend, I can sense you’re troubled - I can smell it on your soul
Do you wonder just how you got here
Could it be you had no place left to go
It’s so nice to have someone to talk to - it’s so nice to have some company
Just lean on back and take your comfort
Time don’t mean too much ‘round here you see

I once was thought to be a good man - but I fell hard and I fell fast
I don’t know if I’ve yet hit bottom
But I do know I’m still paying for my past
Many days I’ve spent in reflection - man nights reliving what I’ve done
Though I never was indicted
Neither has my fate been mourned

Will the next life be any different well I don’t know
If you read the bible you might just think that’s so
But I’m here to tell you there ain’t no guarantees
It don’t matter what book you read
Or which god you try to please
You won’t never be free

I once had a faithless lover - I had a temper, a bottle and a gun
When I considered her indiscretions
Bad things happened and I had to run
So I ran ’til I could run no further - I made my stand when I could take no more
When I saw just what had pursued me
The hounds of hell were at my door

Will the next life be any different well I don’t know
